During the peak months of May to September all of the Machu Picchu train tickets can be sold out several days and sometimes weeks in advance. If you are on a tight schedule it is absolutely essential that you make you train reservations as far in advance as possible. Do not wait until you arrive in Cusco to buy your train tickets. Here’s where and how you can purchase your Machu Picchu train tickets in advance to avoid the worse: not able to make it to Machu Picchu.
a. The best way = Go online: http://machupicchu.center (You can see the availability of train tickets in real time for all the train companies traveling to Machu Picchu. The website is also available in 10 different languages and you can pay with any credit card or debit card.
b. The other alternative is to go to the official websites of the Peruvian train companies: PeruRail and IncaRail. However, you will have to search each website individually. Additionally, you cannot pay with a debit card. You must have a VISA that supports “verified by visa”. There may be other restrictions as well.
Which train station do I choose?
Well, travelers need to know that trains no longer run from the train station in Cusco city center. Trains now depart from a station in Poroy, a small village about a 20 minute bus/taxi ride from downtown Cusco. However very few trains depart from Poroy. The vast majority of trains to Machu Picchu actually depart from the station in the beautiful Inca town of Ollantaytambo which is located in the Sacred Valley about 65 kilometres from Cusco.
What you need to do is search routes for Ollantaytambo > Machu Picchu and back. Remember that from Cusco it takes 1.5 hours to reach Ollantaytambo train station. So, plan to leave 2 hours prior via taxi or transfer services.
